WEBJun 4, 2019 · The other ultimate "free cutting" insert mill is Dapra. The RG copies are not as good, I have blown a few up running normal Dapra speeds and feeds. I have managed to break a shear hog, good cutters but not as strong as Dapra. Never managed to break one of those, and not through lack of trying. Good range of insert styles and grinds.

WEBMay 11, 2017 · Shear Hog is a wonderful tool IF you have the horsepower to pull it. I would start with a drilling a hole 1/2 inch hole in one corner then follow that with a 1/2 inch 3 flute end mill using a 40% step over at 5000 RPM AND 40 to 50 IPM feed rate. I would use a G73 drill cycle to go deep.

WEBThe ShearHog burdickjp linked to looks very similar in terms of tooth geometry. Namely positive rake in both axes. It also appears to be a lower overall height. I like that for the lower amount of overhang to the tool. If they are equal in other ways the lower profile for less overhang would be my choice. Same with buying an arbor.

WEBFeb 3, 2019 · I have always found that a 45 degree face mill with a polished insert and aggressive lead angle to produce the best surface finish in aluminum. I reserve the 90 degree face mills for mild steel. The only exception is the Ripper and Shear Hog family of face mills. Those are 90 degrees and leave a reasonable surface finish in aluminum.

WEBFeb 15, 2009 · A 4" face mill will get bogged down at high RPM and a deep cut while a 5" will do fine with a lower speed range and lighter cut. Softer material is always easier. A good all around face mill for this machine is a 3" with standard inserts or a 4" with high shear inserts. All my small knee mills have 1", 2", 3" and 4" face mills set up on R8 shanks.

WEBFly cutter isnt such an issue for the 440. The Shear hog is a good tool (basically an older design that is similar to the ripper mill/Korloy item mentioned earlier). The common thread here is single cutting edge. Personally I try to keep the rpm in the 6000+ range for everything I do on the 440.
