Somewhere around here I reported my results with various sizes of SS media from 3/161/2" diameter spheres, using a 4" diameter mill jar to mill the charcoal. The potassium nitrate grinds better with the larger 1/2" media. The sweet spot for charcoal in my rudimentary testing was 5/16" diameter.

I've made some pretty good black powder using a coffee grinder and porter porter and pestle, but I was looking into getting a ball was going to get one of the cheap 70 6lb rock tumbler and modify it per skylighter's directions, but I would still need to get media to fill it half full, 200 1/2" balls.

Ballup a 3/4inch square piece of paper towel or Kleenex, and, using the tip of the awl, gently force it down into the nozzle hole alongside the fuse. This ball of tissue holds the fuse and loose fuel in place. Put a band of 1inch wide masking tape around the nozzle end of the torch, and crimp it over and around the fuse.

Here's a shot of some stainless steel media and ceramic media. The stainless steel must be sparkresistant, nonmagnetic steel in the 300series. Alloys 304 and 316 are the most common stainless steels of this type. Highdensity alumina ceramic media is the type I've heard of most often being used in ball mills.
